B.C. RCMP leadership shakeup and the fentanyl-network question: what is verified, and what is not
Two social posts point at a real accountability question. The evidence supports the RCMP leadership change and the fentanyl-network concern. It does not prove political interference or connect the two stories.
Legal caveat: Allegations are not findings. Comment-thread claims are not evidence. NewsForBC is not accusing Dwayne McDonald, John Brewer, the RCMP, any politician, or any named person of corruption, cartel involvement, obstruction or political interference.

What RCMP confirmed
The official RCMP statement says John Brewer was appointed interim Deputy Commissioner and Commanding Officer in British Columbia, and that McDonald was relieved of duties after allegations dating back to 2016–2018 were recently brought to the RCMP’s attention. The statement says investigations are ongoing and that the RCMP will not provide further details at this time.
What fentanyl records show
CBC has reported RCMP officials saying Canada has become a producer and exporter of illegal fentanyl and that the threat shifted from importation toward domestic production. CBC also reported a Health Canada briefing note saying superlab interdictions across B.C., Ontario and Alberta suggest domestic supply is more than sufficient for the domestic market.
Canada’s Fentanyl Czar interim report says fentanyl production and trade involve precursor chemicals, transnational organized crime groups, money laundering, ports, couriers, legal authorities, information sharing, RCMP/DEA coordination and regional enforcement hubs, including British Columbia.
RCMP’s 2025 national sprint reported 489 occurrences, 524 arrests and seizures including 46.17 kg of fentanyl, 122 firearms and cash, while stating the operation targeted production, distribution, criminal networks and chemical precursors.
