Dan Dicks land-transfer video: what is verified, what needs documents, and what the numbers mean
Dan Dicks’ new Press For Truth video belongs in the ongoing NewsForBC land-transfer ledger — but the claim stack needs careful labels and a few corrections.
Short version
The public issue is real: Global BC reports that documents show more than 300,000 acres of Crown land could be transferred to five Vancouver Island First Nations as treaty work continues, with examples including Hatley Castle/Royal Roads, Victoria waterfront/property near the Legislature, Discovery Island Provincial Park and Sooke Mountain Provincial Park.
The Dan Dicks video is useful as an accountability prompt, but not every line is proven. The 334,000-acre figure is not “the size of Portugal.” It is about 1,352 km² — roughly 11.8 times the City of Vancouver and about 334 times Stanley Park, but only about 1.5% of Portugal. The separate 9.6-million-hectare claim would be about 10.2% of B.C., but NewsForBC did not find the specific official parcel list behind that larger figure in this pass.
What the X video claims
The captured transcript says “commitments already total more than 334,000 acres,” claims the package includes Hatley Castle and downtown Victoria parcels, and warns that public access and local bylaws may change once land becomes treaty land. It also uses stronger rhetoric — “giveaway,” “shakedown,” “indigenous grievance industry” and “global scheme” — that NewsForBC does not adopt as fact.
Claim table
| Claim | Evidence label | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| X video exists and makes the land-transfer claims | Confirmed social-video claim | The Dan Dicks / Press For Truth X post and 6:48 video were captured; transcript and contact sheet are preserved. |
| More than 300,000 acres of Crown land may be transferred to Vancouver Island First Nations | Supported by Global BC reporting | Global BC reported that documents show more than 300,000 acres could be transferred to five Vancouver Island First Nations as treaties are finalized. |
| The parcels include Hatley Castle / Royal Roads, waterfront in Victoria, property near the Legislature, Discovery Island Provincial Park and Sooke Mountain Provincial Park | Supported by Global BC reporting, still needs underlying parcel list | Global BC names these examples. NewsForBC still wants the actual internal parcel list/map as the primary record. |
| Songhees is in Stage 5 final agreement negotiations through Te’mexw Treaty Association | Supported by B.C. government page | B.C. page says TTA negotiates for Malahat, Scia’new, Songhees, Snaw-aw-as and T’sou-ke, and lists Stage 5 final-agreement negotiations. |
| Songhees population is “about 600” | Broadly supported with updated figure | B.C.’s page lists Songhees population as 666; the video’s “about 600” is rough, not exact. |
| 334,000 acres is “the size of Portugal” | Incorrect for 334,000 acres | 334,000 acres is about 1,352 km², while Portugal is about 92,212 km². The Portugal comparison applies only to the separate 9.6-million-hectare claim if that larger number is established. |
| Potential deals could reach 9.6 million hectares / roughly 10% of B.C. | Mathematically plausible, source not pinned in this check | 9.6 million hectares is about 96,000 km², or about 10.16% of B.C. NewsForBC did not find the specific official “9.6m ha” source list in this pass. |
| Public access could be limited or eliminated after transfer | Concern reported; exact effect depends on final treaty text | Global BC reports concerns that public access and existing zoning/local rules may not be preserved. The legal effect requires final treaty text, implementation legislation and parcel-specific rules. |
| Local bylaws no longer apply / zero city council oversight | Needs legal precision | Treaty settlement lands can change governance and land-use authority, but “whatever they want” and “zero oversight” overstates without the final treaty, self-government, land-use and consultation provisions. |
| David Eby/NDP is corrupt or committing treason | Not supported / not adopted | NewsForBC treats this as a transparency and public-ledger issue, not a personal criminal allegation. No corruption finding is established by the video. |
Number check
| Item | Calculation | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 334,000 acres | 1,351.65 km² | About 11.75 times City of Vancouver if Vancouver is ~115 km²; about 334 times Stanley Park if Stanley Park is ~4.05 km²; about 47% of Metro Vancouver land area if Metro Vancouver is ~2,878 km². |
| Portugal comparison | Portugal is ~92,212 km² / ~22.8 million acres | 334,000 acres is about 1.47% of Portugal, so it is not Portugal-sized. The video’s Portugal comparison only fits the separate 9.6 million hectare / 96,000 km² claim. |
| 9.6 million hectares | 96,000 km² | About 10.16% of B.C.’s ~944,735 km² area; this larger figure was not independently sourced to a specific official parcel list in this check. |
What still needs records

- Maps for every parcel proposed as treaty land, including Hatley/Royal Roads, Victoria waterfront/parking parcels, Discovery Island and Sooke Mountain parks.
- Valuations, title status, current use, park status and whether each parcel is proposed, negotiated, approved or transferred.
- Plain-language statement of post-transfer public access, zoning, local-government and bylaw effects.
- Contingent-liability treatment in B.C.’s public accounts and budget documents.
- Consultation schedule for affected municipalities, residents, tenure holders and other First Nations, including the Esquimalt/Songhees Hatley dispute reported by local media.
